The Harry and Sara Lepman collection at the Library of Congress consists of sheet music, mostly dating from the 1890's to the end of the Second World War. It is part of a larger collection of American political memorabilia and artifacts that Mr. Lepman had assembled during his lifetime. Most of the non-music materials were given to the American History Museum of the Smithsonian Institution. The majority of the songs date from the period 1880-1945 and were composed in order to rally the public to the support of military efforts in the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II. Most date from the World War I era (1914-1918). The patriotic titles and lyrics are enhanced by colorfully illustrated cover art depicting American patriotic themes. Composers Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, and Al Jolson are well represented.
