Autobiography of Martha Cox, 1928.

Facsimile of Martha Cox's 1928 autobiography, which consists of detailed anecdotes about her family and life experiences. Begins with a genealogical account of her family and biographies of her parents, including their childhoods in Indiana and travels westward to Utah in 1849. Includes a variety of anecdotes on Cox's childhood (including her home life and teaching herself to read), Utah history, the Civil War, and her friendships with Comanche Indians. Much of the autobiography focuses on Cox's struggles to become a schoolteacher despite her lack of formal education and her decision to enter a plural marriage in 1869. Also covers her family life in and struggles with polygamy, the deaths of several of her children and her husband, and her mission to Mexico.

Martha Cragun Cox was born on March 3, 1852, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was one of the first schoolteachers in Dixie, Utah, and continued her teaching career for almost fifty years. At the age of seventeen she entered into a plural marriage with Isaiah Cox and moved to Overton and later Bunkerville, Nevada. She was actively involved in the Mormon Church and served on an extended mission to Mexico beginning in 1900. Cox died in 1932. From the description of Autobiography of Martha C...
