These Glasgow letters were written to Bessie Judith Zaban Jones (Mrs. Howard Mumford Jones) between 1930 and 1945 from Richmond, Vir. (Glasgow's home), Castine, Me. (Glasgow's sometime summer residence), and other locations. Topics include their friendship and arrangements for visitations, Glasgow's ongoing writing, and her health problems. Fourteen of these letters were published in: Letters of Ellen Glasgow, comp. and ed. with an introd. and commentary by Blair Rouse (New York : Harcourt, Brace, c1958). Two of the Christmas greeting cards have scenes of Glasgow's Richmond home.

Bessie Zaban was born in 1898 in Atlanta, Ga., the daughter of Austrian immigrants. She married Howard Mumford Jones; they had eight children. During World War II she worked with the Window Shop, an organization that assisted Jewish refugees from Europe; later she worked for Harvard University Press and wrote three books. She died in 1997.
