Benjamin Dix diary, 1833 : while on a journey to Michigan.

Diary chronicling the author's trip from his home in Groton, Mass. to southeast Michigan and back in the summer of 1833. On the trip west, Dix stopped in Albany to visit his kinsman John A. Dix (1798-1879), at that time the New York secretary of state. While in Michigan, he conducted business with Sherman D. Dix in Northfield, visited Capt. John Dix in Dixboro, and purchased land in Detroit. Dix describes in detail the conditions of his travel, the towns he visited, and the topography along the route. Also included, bound in and inverted at the back of the volume, are lists of stops along the route, distances traveled, letters written along the way, numbers of fellow passengers and mode of travel on each leg of the trip, weather conditions, and ledger accounts of expenses. These include Dix's expenses during the trip as well as transactions on behalf of Sherman D. Dix. Following this are many pages of ledger accounts from 1846 and 1853-1856, most of which have been excised leaving wide stubs.

Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later.
