Gasoline Price Investigation, 1935-1955. nvestigative file compiled under two separate legislative committees; plus an independent investigation file begun under Attorney General Thomas M. Kavanaugh prior to offering legislation creating a bureau of licensing and regulation of oil and gasoline dealers. The exhibits accumulated by the investigative task force include United States government publications on the oil industry 1920-1955; midwestern state government publications; petroleum industry publications; gasoline dealer and distributor publications; transcripts of public hearings; charts of production and sales; court cases, including cases for non-payment of gasoline tax; gasoline tax data; correspondence with oil companies; cartographic records relating to distribution (see Appendix A); photocopies of gas station leases; and sworn statements from dealers and distributors. Case files, 1913-1958 (28 ft., 6 in.). These files consists of Attorney General opinions, investigations, Supreme and Circuit Court cases. Included in these files are writs of mandamus, plaintiff's statements of charges, defendants answer, notice of appeal, appellant's statement, appelee's answer, Supreme Court briefs, letters in, carbons out, telegrams, memoranda, transcripts of testimony, newspaper clippings, briefs of amicus curiae, taxation of costs, and Supreme Court pleadings. Some files also include photos. Included among the cases is a rate tariff case brought by the Ann Arbor Railroad (1913); Indian fishing and hunting rights on reservations (1916); removal proceedings against Circuit Court Judge Albert Widdis and the persecution of Mennonites in Oscoda County following World War I (1920); Doud vs. Kenyon, land claim of Mackinac Island State Park Comission (1919-1930); patent infringement of automobile titles (1930); Bank and insurance company receivership proceedings; taxing powers of the state; illegal seizure of gill nets by the Conservation Department; state control of mineral rights; Green Lake Township (Grand Traverse County) vs. Department of Conservation, illegal transfer of state park land to National Music Camp (1952); Legality of chiropractors giving prescriptions for narcotics (1944). Case files also include removal proceedings against Harry Jackson, Warden of Southern Michigan Prison (1945); St. Clair flats bottom land (1952); policing powers of the state in enacting pure food and drug laws (1946); condemnation proceedings relating to Porcupine Mountains State Park (1944-1951); litigation over the constitutional amendment creating the Fair Employment Practices Commission (1947); legality of a cigarette tax tax (1947); equal employment of women (1948); legality of Civil Service pay rates (1941); Veterans re-employment rights (1952-1953) Truck Act, known as the "Little Smith Act," regulating Community Party activities in Michigan (1951-1954); and investigations of Communist Party activities in labor unions (1953-1954).
