General description of the collection: The War Disaster Relief Plans, Western Theater of Operations, 1942, contains six War Disaster Relief Plans written from summer 1942 through early 1943 by the United States (U.S.) Army Western Defense Command under the 4th U.S. Army acting with elements of the Ninth Service Command. The plans consist of a general plan for the entire Western Theater of Operations, a plan for the Communications Zone in the Western Theater of Operations under Ninth Service Command, and four specific plans for each of four War Disaster Relief Administrative Areas. All plans contain policies for the U.S. Army to follow in the event of a "total or partial failure of civilian and other governmental agencies" following enemy raids, bombing raids, or invasion of the Western U.S. during World War II (WWII). In addition to policies, the Administrative Area plans contain information on local authorities, emergency services, and supplies in the form of charts, tables of equipment, and maps of transportation routes and lines of communication. The collection also includes five folders containing large maps, charts and tables that are housed separately in Oversize storage.

On 4 June 1942, the U.S. Army, Western Theater of Operations, was authorized to create a War Disaster Relief Plan for Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.
