William Atkinson was born in Halifax, England in 1891. He emigrated to the United States in 1910, arriving in Columbus, Ga. in 1924. He worked as a gardener for Columbus landowner Gunby Jordan and then as post gardener at Fort Benning during parts of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Later he opened his own business, Atkinson's Cottage Nursery. Ruth Atkinson was Mrs. Jesse Isidor Straus' social secretary for just over a year and had also been a high school teacher in Columbus.
