René Magritte correspondence with Paul Colinet, circa 1934-1959.

Magritte's correspondence with the Belgian poet Paul Colinet documents the painter's life and career from 1934, when the two Surrealists met, to 1957, when Colinet passed away. In these letters to Colinet, Magritte discusses his art theory, specific paintings of his, such as the Variante de la tristesse, and literary works, notably L'art magique by André Breton. He also seeks Colinet's advice for titles to several of his paintings. One of Magritte's letters contains a postcript by Irène Hamoir. The correspondence includes eight letters and postcards by Paul Colinet.
