Logbook of Barque Ceres, New York to Sumatra, 1857-1859.

The Barque Ceres sailed from New York on December 26, 1857, arriving in Sumatra on April 27, 1858. From the beginning of the journey until April 18th, the logbook was kept by Augustus L. Melvin; while Melvin was ill, Oliver C. Cooper recorded the entries until May 17, 1858 upon which the task. At this point the ship was on its return journey to New York. Melvin records on May 22nd that "Oliver taken sick same way that I was pain in his bowels." The Ceres sailed to St. Helena on its return voyage and anchored in New York on February 18, 1859. Logbook entries record weather conditions, rigging changes made in accordance with weather conditions, daily activities aboard ship, supplies taken aboard upon arrival in Sumatra, ships sighted, health of sailors, etc. Captain Thomas Fuller, of Salem, MA, was the captain for this journey.
