Letter : Cirey, France, to Marie-Louise Mignot, afterwards Denis, Paris, 1737 Dec. 7.

Autograph manuscript of a letter by Voltaire to his niece, Marie-Louise Mignot, afterwards Denis. Dated at head of text: "A Cirey par Vassy en Champagne, 7 Xbre 1737." Signed (p. [4]): V. Begins: "Je reçois, ma chere enfant, votre lettre du 1er decembre. Je vais vous parler comme à ma nièce, à ma fille et à mon amie." Voltaire, then living at Cirey in the Champagne region with the marquise du Châtelet, proposes that his late sister's elder daughter, the recently orphaned Marie-Louise Mignot, should marry Louis François Toussaint du Ravet de Champbonin, the son of a neighbor; he offers a dowry and help with her establishment. He also denies rumors that he planned to move to Prussia at the invitation of the crown prince, the future King Frederick II, and comments on his relationship with the du Châtelets. Mignot rejected the proposed marriage and married Nicolas-Charles Denis the following February.
