Laura Maude Wheeler papers, 1903-1966.

Collection comprises correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, publications, postcards, and photographs relating to Methodist missionary Laura Maude Wheeler and her work as a teacher and school administrator in Tianjin, China from 1903 to 1948, and as an evangelist in the United States from 1949 to 1966. Correspondence consists of letters to Wheeler, mostly from the missions branch of the Methodist church and former students, that postdate her missionary career in China. Diaries include one volume, 1935-1938, in which Wheeler describes the beginning of the second Sino-Japanese War in 1937. Manuscripts include more formal writings about topics of interest to Wheeler, some of which are included in her autobiography, Recolletion of my Chinese days, which is also included in the collection. Topics include local and historical Chinese subjects, the lives of Chinese Christians, her internment by the Japanese during the Sino-Japanese War from 1943-1945, and her travels in Asia. Publications include educational and administrative publications, as well as religious publications on Christianity and missionary work in China. Collection also includes two containers of postcards, mostly from Asia, collected by Wheeler during her travels, as well as photographs collected and taken by Wheeler, mostly of Chinese people and places near the mission school in Tianjin.

American Laura Maude Wheeler (1874-1966) was a Methodist missionary in Tientsin (Tianjin), northern China, primarily at the Keen School, from 1903 to 1948. From 1943 to 1945, she and other missionaries were interned as prisoners of war by the Japanese in China. Wheeler was a writer and traveler who was acutely aware of China's cultural and physical landscape. She wrote widely on topics relating to Christianity in China and published an autobiography, Recollection of my Chinese days. ...
