Signed manuscript letter from Robert Louis Stevenson to his mother. Stevenson complains of bad health and asks his mother for money. The letter (1 leaf) is mounted on a larger sheet and housed in a slipcase, together with a typewritten transcript of the letter and a print of a portrait of Stevenson.

Robert Lewis (later changed to "Louis") Balfour Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 13, 1850. He attended the University of Edinburgh intending to become a civil engineer like his father, but ill health curtailed his studies and prompted him to travel to warmer climates.
