Copy of Norton Jacob's diary and autobiography. The brief autobiography describes Jacob's conversion to Mormonism and his life in Illinois, while the diary, which covers the years 1844-1851, focuses on his participation in the Mormon Vanguard Brigade of 1847. The diary describes the Brigade's travels across the plains to Salt Lake City, including references to encounters with Indians, hunting bison, stopping at Fort Laramie, and the Brigade's activities upon their arrival in Utah. Norton Jacob was born in Sheffield, Massachusetts, on August 11, 1804. Influenced by the writings of Parley Pratt, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1841 while living in Illinois. Jacob moved with the Mormons to Nauvoo in 1842, in time to witness the laying of the cornerstone of the Navuoo Temple.
