This collection comprises files retained by Joan Ariel that document the University of California, Irvine Women's Studies program, resources for women at UC Irvine, and the UC Irvine LGBT community. As the Women's Studies Librarian and a Women's Studies faculty member at UC Irvine, Ariel served with numerous groups and organizations that supported women's issues and the LGBT community on and off campus, including the Women's Studies Program Steering Committee, The Lilac Collective, and the Pacific Women's Studies Association. This collection reflects her involvement with these groups and many others and documents their activities from 1971 to 2000.

Joan Ariel was a long-time staff member at the University of California (UC), active for nearly 20 years as the Women's Studies librarian at UC Irvine (UCI). Ariel also served as an instructor and the academic coordinator of Women's Studies. She was a key player in numerous UCI campus organizations and programs relating to lesbian and gay issues.
