Grace King papers, 1906-1920.

This collection consists of Louisiana author Grace King's handwritten and typed correspondence, research notes, fragments of manuscript drafts, genealogical documents and transcriptions about numerous Creole families, newspaper clippings, and her 1915 Doctor of Letters diploma from Tulane University. Grace King's genealogical research was done in cooperation with the archives of St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, and other sources; the notes included concern the following families: Allain, Blanc, Crozat, Chaise, Chauvin, Curtis, Cuvellier, Delemo de Chalmette, Delzira, Derbigny, Destrahan, Dreux, Duge, Forstall, Garrigues, Labatut, LeBreton, LeMoyne-Vandruiel, Macarty, Olivier, Pantalba, Rabutin Chantal, Theard, VillereĢ, and White.

Grace King was the third child and eldest daughter of William Woodson King, a prosperous New Orleans attorney, and Sarah Ann Miller King. Impoverished by the Civil War, Grace King lived in New Orleans for the remainder of her life with her mother, brother, and two unmarried sisters, although she was able to travel in the United States and Europe and cultivated relationships with notables in the worlds of writing and publishing.
