Robert Tillson, a wealthy Quincy, Illinois merchant, and his wife Charlotte, had at least five children. Their son William H. was mustered in as a private in Company E, 84th Illinois Infantry on September 1, 1862. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, and spent some months as a prisoner of war in Virginia until he was paroled, and then discharged April 29, 1864.
