Manuscript neatly written in cursive, recording the text of Prof. Weierstrass's lectures in German on the calculus of variations in the summer of 1882. Pages 342-344 are in a different hand from the rest of the text. At the head of the title page is written J.H. Tanner, Ithaca, N.Y. Bound in following the manuscript are two printed German dissertations on the calculus of variations: Untersuchungen zur Variations-Rechnung, by Ernst Zermelo at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität at Berlin (1894), and Behandlung einiger Aufgaben der Variationsrechnung, welche sich auf Raumcurven constanter erster Krümmung beziehen, by Oswald Venske at the Georg-Augusts-Universität at G̈öttingen (1891).

Biographical Note: Karl Weierstrass was a German mathematician. He was born in Osterfelde, Westphalia Germany in 1815 and graduated from the Theological and Philosophical Academy at Muünster in 1841. He became professor of mathematics at the University of Berlin. In 1856, he was elected to the Berlin Academy.
