Charles McDonald Journal/Account Book, 1855-1860.

This journal/account book was kept by Charles McDonald, an engineer and later captain on a series of small steamers engaged in China Trade during the 1850's. One of the steamers, the S.S. Lily, was chartered by the French in September of 1857 to accompany their steam frigate, the Catinat, from Macao to the Tonkin Gulf; a memo log of this trip is included in the journal in an unidentified hand, mentioning Captain Charles McDonald in the third person. The Lily was also chartered by the French and used for transporting troops during the T'ai-ping rebellion on the part of the Chinese. Mcdonald chronicles this event, identified as the "Second War at Canton;" the date of the entry is December 27, 1857.
