Printed circular letters discussing plans for anniversary celebrations, 18-21 Oct. 1881, in Yorktown, Va., as part of the U.S. Centennial of the American Revolution; the circulars discuss participation by South Carolinians along with details of meals, accommodations, limits on personal baggage, and transportation via railroad and steamboat; issued by the Adjutant and Inspector General's Department, Columbia, S.C., signed in print by A[rthur] M[iddleton] Manigault, during his tenure (1880 to 1886), as Adjutant and Inspector General State of South Carolina. "General Order No. 14" directs that Col. Hugh S. Thompson and Lt. Col. L. de B. McCrady, First Regiment Rifles, S.V.T., were detailed to serve as colonel and lieutenant colonel of the Centennial Battalion which was to represent the State of South Carolina at Yorktown the following October. The Yorktown Centennial Battalion would consist of one captain, two lieutenants, two sergeants, and twenty-four men augmented by two supernumerary men. Two sets of colors were to be allowed the Battalion, including the historic "Eutaw Flag," of Colonel William Washington, lent by the Washington Light Infantry, of Charleston, S.C.
