Captain Benjamin Franklin Robinson Papers, 1824-1868.

Collection includes: a certificate, dated July 5, 1824 for Moses Goodhue of the Salem Charitable Mechanic Association; military papers of William A. Brooks of Salem, MA, a member of the Volunteer Militia of Massachusetts; certificates of citizenship for nine crewmen on the Barque Contest captained by Robinson; correspondence pertaining to the Ship Defender and to Robinson's family; an account book for groceries purchased between 1849 and 1856; a day book, written between 1850 and 1851 pertaining to carpenters and laborers working on a personal home, which also contains recipes for household items and processes for waterproofing, jappaning leather, etc.; and an indexed notebook describing in detail the construction of the Ship Defender.
