George William Ely correspondence, 1870-1905.

Personal correspondence of George William Ely, merchant and postmaster of Wilbraham, Mass. The bulk of the collection consists of letters between Ely and his wife Edith H. (Hayden) Ely, 1874-1882, most of which are courtship letters written before their marriage in 1877. Among the subjects are their daily activities, Edith's health, and news of friends and family. Included are letters describing their grief after the death of George's brother Robert Ely in 1875. The collection also contains letters to George from Robert Ely, 1870-1875, about family matters, Robert's studies at Amherst College beginning in 1872, and plans for him to visit home; and letters to George from his daughter Ethel Hayden Ely, 1886-1890. Also included is miscellaneous correspondence to George, 1874-1905, and Ethel Hayden Ely, 1877-1883, from friends and family members.
