Bruce G. Wright World War I memoir, 1921.

Manuscript memoir by Bruce G. Wright, an African American soldier, detailing his service during World War I in the Massachusetts National Guard and the 372nd U.S. Infantry, a segregated regiment, from 15 June 1917 to 8 Oct. 1918. Written in 1921, the memoir describes camp life and flare-ups of racial tension; the ocean crossing, including an encounter with a submarine; the regiment's arrival in France and warm welcome by the French; travel to the front; drills, long marches, engagements with the enemy, and conditions in the trenches; cooperation with French troops; and fighting at the Argonne Forest, "No Man's Land," and near Verdun.
