Rosamond Gifford papers, 1930-1954.

A small collection of papers, primarily the incoming personal correspondence of philanthropist and French instructor Rosamond Gifford of Boston and Duxbury, Mass. Correspondents include her father Carleton Sprague Gifford, mother Raymah Dowse Gifford, aunt Mary N. Gifford, cousin Leonard H. Dowse, George L. Lincoln of Harvard, Walford Walden, Leslie Grinnell, Jim Risk, and friends from the Waltham School for Girls. Among the subjects are personal and family matters, visits, health, current events, and political figures. Included are letters written while Gifford was a student at the Sorbonne and Institut de Phone̹tique in Paris in the 1930s and during her travels in Europe. The bulk of the correspondence was written shortly before and during World War II and includes letters discussing Adolf Hitler, deployments, censorship, the Red Cross, women in the armed services, rationing, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Russian advance on Berlin, and prospects for peace. Included are a few printed items.
