Facsimiles of three record book kept by James Bleak in St. George, Utah, from 1869-1877. The volumes include council records and entries on interactions with Ute and Navajo Indians, the adjustment of the boundary line between Utah and Nevada (1870), the addition of a telegraph line (1871), plans to build the St. George Temple, construction work and expenditures on the Temple, and the formation of the United Order of the City of St. George, including articles and suggested rules, the names of officers, and the prices of livestock, agriculture, and other goods. Also included are copies of letters from Mormon leaders including Brigham Young, Erastus Snow, and George A. Smith, which include notes on Mormon policies and theology.

James Godson Bleak was born on November 15, 1829, in Surrey, England. Following the deaths of his parents and younger brother, Bleak joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1850 and became president of the Church's Whitechapel Branch in 1854. In 1856 he left England for Utah, and in 1861 was called by Brigham Young to join the Southern Utah Mission (later the St. George Stake).
