Three letters to his mother: 1. 1863 March 21 - writing from camp near Fredericksburg detailing the suffering of the soldiers through a bitterly cold winter, thin muslin tents offering no protection, horses and men frozen to death, "wooden doctors" young and untrained "a sin and an outrage," the war "fast ruining our country;" 2. 1863 April 22 - longing for home and for peace; 3. 1863 Aug. 2, Warrington, Va. - "the duty of any man north to protect his country" and "any person who sympathizes with the South ought to be hung without judge or jury..."
