Edwin F. Hatfield (1807-1883) was the son of Oliver S. and Jane (Mann) Hatfield, and was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. He graduated at Middlebury College in 1829 and studied theology at the Seminary in Andover, Massachusetts. He served as a pastor in Presbyterian churches in New York, New Jersey, and Missouri until 1863. In 1864, he became special agent of the Union Theological Seminary in New York and raised a considerable sum of money for the institution. An amateur genealogist and historian, he authored the book A History of Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Hatfield family of Essex County, New Jersey, traced their lineage through Matthias Hatfield, born in 1624 in at Danzig Stadt, Westpreussen, Preussen (now Gdansk, Poland), the son of a religious dissenter who fled England with Dr. John Robinson and his congregation. Matthias emigrated to America and built a home in Elizabeth, New Jersey in the 1660s. The home remained in the Hatfield family until 1880. The collection contains Reverend Edwin F. Hatfield's genealogical notes, charts, clippings, and correspondence relating to the history of the Hatfield/Hetfield and related families. Also includes a notebook kept by Rev. Hatfield containing data on various families and some records of the Episcopal Church of Elizabeth, New Jersey.
