After Isherwood dropped out of Cambridge University in 1925, he became the private secretary to the French violinist AndreĢ Mangeot. Mangeot's son, Sylvain, the manuscript's illustrator, would become the Diplomatic Editor for the Reuters News Agency and the author of The Adventures of a Manchurian: The Story of Lobsang Thondup (Collins, 1974).
