Josiah Morse papers, 1940-1942.

Letters, 17 Feb. 1940 - 29 Aug. 1942, written to and from applicants from around the United States re faculty vacancies in the Department of Psychology and Philosophy at University of South Carolina; collection includes telegrams, letters of recommendation, and various styles of academic resumes from applicants within S.C., as well as at Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Ohio State, Oregon State, etc. Some items reflect the U.S. involvement in World War II and the war's impact on higher education; several letters involve efforts to secure employment for refugees and immigrants from Europe, including at least one candidate promoted by the "Committee on Displaced Psychologists" sponsored by the American Psychological Association (see letterhead stationery, 16 Aug. 1940, from Barbara S. Burks re the file of Dr. Hans Herma of Vienna, and subsequent papers); and a mimeographed notice, 8 Aug. 1942 for faculty planning to enlist: "Leaves of absence for faculty members to enter nation's service," addressed to the faculty and administrative staff from the Board of Trustees (reprinted from the minutes, 2 June 1941).

College professor and department head, 1911-1946, of the Dept. of Psychology and Philosophy at University of South Carolina; native of Richmond, Va.; originally named Josiah Moses, he changed his name in 1907 during a period of unemployment, which inspired him to pen what is believed to be the first article on prejudice by an American psychologist; Morse received his BA and MA degrees from Richmond College; and in 1904, he received a Ph.D. in philosophy from Clark University (Worchester, Mass.);...
