Journals and accounts of Isaac Norris, 1733 - 1749.

Accounts and three journals kept by Norris between 1743 and 1749. The journals were penned on the back of the account ledger. The accounts of the family firm, Norris and Company for 1733-1734 and 1739-1742 (ff.22-63). Included is an entry listing "Negro Peter's wages when he ran away in London" (f. 54v). Journals of Norris's travels from London to to the Netherlands from in April - July 1734 (ff. 1-9), including accounts of Rotterdam, Delft, the Hague, Leyden, Harlem, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, and Lisle. The entries list sights and attractions and discuss the political life of the Dutch Republic; his 1745 trip to Albany to attend the Indian conference (ff. 13-19), and a journey "in Company with James Wright" in April 1749 to survey lands on the Susquehanna River. (ff. 19 v. -- 21).

Isaac Norris, a prominent Philadelphia Quaker politician, son of Isaac Norris (1671-1735). He managed the family firm, Norris and Company and after his father's death became its senior partner. In 1727, Norris was elected to the common council of Philadelphia and in 1730 became an alderman. In 1735, he was elected to the Assembly of Pennsylvania, succeeding his late father.
