Letter, 1831 Feb. 9 (Sandhills, [pmk. Camden, S.C.]), to Stephen D. Miller (Stateburg, S.C.)

Letter re local news of Camden, S.C., area and with discussion of plans for management of Stephen Decatur Miller's plantation and business affairs during his absence from South Carolina; acknowledging receipt of a letter from Miller the previous day regarding the identity of the author of "the old Planter which lately appeared in the Camden Journal" newspaper, identifying the author as Jo[seph] Mickle, "the old gentleman has become quite fond of late of seeing his writing in print." Boykin agrees to accommodate Miller's request for a $5,000 loan "to lift a note you have in the United States Bank" and noting, "All the loose change the Estate will have in possession this year I expect to lay out in negroes." The letter also states that the mill would begin sawing plank for Miller's boat the following day and that "Mack... appears to be very anxious to commence building." Boykin notes that he would talk further with Miller "about my taking charge of your planting interest during your absence." Miller's term as governor of South Carolina ended 1 Dec. 1830; elected to the U.S. Senate, Miller's upcoming "absence" refers to his service in the U.S. Congress, a term that began 4 Mar. 1831 and ended 2 Mar. 1833, when he resigned due to ill health.

Lancaster and Sumter District S.C. attorney, plantation owner, and politician. He served in the South Carolina Senate and was governor of the state 1828 to 1830. An ardent supporter of states rights, Miller also served in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Miller's daughter Mary Boykin Miller married James Chesnut, Jr. (1815-1885).
