The collection consists of video recordings, still images, and printed ephemera related to the program Modern Art in Los Angeles: African American Avant-Gardes, 1965-1990, held on 15-16 January 2008 at the Getty Center. It brought together Maren Hassinger, Ulysses Jenkins, Barbara McCullough, and Senga Nengudi, four African American avant-garde artists who worked with organized collaboratives such as Studio Z and Othervisions Studio in the 1970s and 1980s before going onto individual careers of national and international importance. Kellie Jones and Judith Wilson conducted the oral history interviews (15 January) and moderated the public conversation (16 January).
