At Harris Neck, Georgia, in the remote northern reaches of McIntosh County, the United States government, in the fall of 1942, confiscated the lands along the South Newport and Barbour Island Rivers. General Hunter Harris (1909-1987) was commander in chief of the United States Air Force Pacific Air Forces, 1964-1967. He earned his pilot's wings in 1933 and served in the European theater during World War II.
