Letter signed from Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, St. Albans, to Roger Manners, Lord Rutland [manuscript], 1596 October 16.

Letter offers last minute advice to Lord Rutland in preparation for his tour of the Continent. Last segment of the letter in Essex's own hand: "This was written yester-night att St Albans butt so ill written as I was fayne to use my mans hand to copy yt out. Excuse the hasty writing and my indisposition after my iorney w[hi]ch keepes me from correcting yt. More leysure may bring forth a worke of more price, though this is all thatt I direct unto you is full of affection and accompanyed w[i]th my best wishes."

Frederick of Mömpelgard (d. 1608) became the Duke of Württemberg in 1593. Robert, Earl of Essex (1586-1601) was a favorite of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, and occupied a variety of military posts.
