Copy of Thales H. Haskell's diary, kept during the second trip made by Mormon missionaries to the Hopi Indians of northern Arizona in 1859. It covers Haskell's travels from Utah to Arizona and time spent living and working with the Hopi people (which he calls Moquitches and Oribes), including his attempts to learn their language and customs and potentially establish a trading relationship. Also mentions interactions with Navajos. Ends with poem composed after the death of George A. Smith. The first 14 pages of the diary were kept in the Deseret Alphabet.

Thales Hastings Haskell was born in New Salem, Massachusetts, on February 21, 1834. When he was a young child his parents converted to Mormonism, traveled with the Mormons from Nauvoo to Council Bluffs in 1846, and continued on to Salt Lake City in 1847. In 1855 Haskell married Hannah Maria Woodbury, who was accidentally shot and killed by an Indian boy in 1857 (Haskell subsequently married Margaret J. Edwards).
