Letter from J.D. Thompson to Abel Stearns in which the former writes of a contract between Don Eulogio de Celis and then Lieutenant Colonel John C. Frémont for 600 head of buffalo. Thompson writes that he has forwarded the contract to Col. Richard Barnes Mason (Military Governor of California) for arbitration, and is asking for Stearns' input on questions relating to the issue.

Richard Barnes Mason, born in Virginia in 1797, was a Colonel in the United States Army when he arrived in 1847 in California to succeed Kearny as military governor. He was made a Brigadier General in 1848, and retained his position as governor until February 1849. He died of cholera in St. Louis in 1850.
