Lists, accounts and certificates related to the care and protection of prisoners taken by the United States Ship Trumbull from the Schooner Vengeance out of Haiti and imprisoned in Connecticut. Includes a list of prisoners sent on shore, receipts for cash paid for guards and clothing for prisoners, an inventory of tackle and apparel of the Schooner Vengeance, accounts, orders of payment, a letter from Philip B. Bradley, Marshall, to Joshua Huntington instructing him to make the prisoners comfortable during the winter, certificates of ill health of the prisoners at Norwich, Middletown, Hartford, and New London, Connecticut, an order from the Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddard to Joshua Huntington to release prisoners in ill health, and correspondence and miscellaneous financial records.

Joshua Huntington (1751-1821), the son of Jabez Huntington (1719-1786) who made his fortune in shipping, was born in Norwich, Conn. Joshua joined Putnam's brigade in 1775 and was later employed in securing shipping for the use of Continental troops. He is referred to in this collection as an "agent of the Continental Army," in charge of the transfer of wounded soldiers, arms, and supplies. From the description of Papers, 1742-1801.
