John Henry Hopkins papers, 1824-1873.

The papers cover Hopkins's ecclesiastical career, from the consecration of Trinity Church, Pittsburgh, 1824, in his early ministry, to the events of his episcopate. Most of the letters are to Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, with comments on affairs of the Church in Maryland and Vermont. Hopkins gives his views on episcopacy, education, canon law, ritualism, his writings, and his hopes for revival of Catholicism in the Episcopal Church as opposed to the Roman Catholic Church. He does not approve of Bishop Horatio Southgate's mission to Turkey but supports it in a time of crisis, 1849. Numerous items concern clergy and family matters, business of the General Conventions, and relations with the Church of England, especially the Lambeth Conference of 1867. Substantial materials relate to the Civil War and its aftermath: Hopkins' defense of slavery and troubles because of it, his Civil War prayers, views on drafting clergymen for military service, proposals for a letter of reconciliation to the Southern bishops at the end of the war, and efforts to reunite the Episcopal Churches North and South. There are also comments on his sermons and writings by others, and a copy of his Essay on Gothic Architecture, 1836.
