Autobiography of Robert Gardner, Jr., 1884.

Facsimile typescript of an autobiography by Robert Gardner, Jr., written by him in 1884 from a collection of his own diaries (the entire typescript has the title, "Robert Gardner: Utah Pioneer, 1847"). Includes references to his heritage and family life, his conversion to Mormonism, his travels from Canada to Utah, and his life in Salt Lake City, St. George, and Pine Valley, Utah. It highlights the difficulties of westward travel and frontier life, including the death of Gardner's son Robert under a wagon wheel and the freezing death of his nephew. The autobiography also chronicles Gardner's 1857-58 hand cart mission to Canada, his interactions with Brigham Young, the construction and dedication of the St. George Temple, and an unsuccessful bear hunt. Also included in the typescript are Gardner's 1857-58 hand cart mission diary, a brief genealogical chart, and notes from the diary of Gardner's older brother, Archibald. Copies of newspaper clippings with references to Gardner are also included.

Robert Gardner, Jr., was born on October 12, 1819, in Kilsyth, Scotland. In 1821 he emigrated with his family to Canada, where they lived for the next twelve years. Gardner married Jane McKeown in 1841 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1845. In the same year he made a two-week visit to Nauvoo, Illinois, where he met Brigham Young.
