Facsimile of an autobiography and diary kept by Eliza Partridge Lyman from 1846 to 1885. It begins with reminiscences about her early life, her celestial marriage to Joseph Smith ("truly a great trial for me"), her marriage as a plural wife of Amasa Lyman ("nothing but a firm desire to keep the commandment of the Lord could have induced a girl to marry in that way"), her notes from a diary kept while traveling from Nauvoo to Winter Quarters, and a brief description of her travels to Salt Lake City. The majority of the diary was kept while Eliza was in Utah from 1848-1885 and focuses on her daily activities and family life. Included are entries on the death of Amasa Lyman, Eliza's support of polygamy, a long account of the death of her daughter Carlie after childbirth (1879), Eliza's travels to San Juan with her son Platte Lyman (1880), and poems written by Eliza's brother Edward Partridge while he was a missionary in the Sandwich Islands (1883).

Platte D. Lyman, a son of Amasa Lyman and Eliza Partridge Lyman, was born on August 20, 1848, in a wagon on the Platte River. He was called by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help Silas S. Smith head the San Juan Mission in 1879, and essentially took over command of the expedition during Smith's prolonged absences.
