Correspondence, including six letter books, printed reports, pamphlets and documents relating to land agriculture, irrigation and resources in Western Canada; family correspondence; newspapers and maps; drafts of "Historical Narrative", and critical comments by J.N. Wallace and others; photographs, 1858-1930. The papers constitute one of the most complete records of the Department of the Interior policies between 1880 and 1904 and also supplement records on the Alberta Water Resources in the Provincial Archives, and Canadian Pacific Railway papers.

Pearce, W. (William), 1848-1930

William Pearce (1848-1930) apprenticed as a surveyor, joining the Dept. of the Interior in that capacity in 1874. By 1884 he was acting as the departments chief advisor on the development of the North-West. Calgary became his headquarters in 1884 when he was appointed Superintendent of Mines. His position rapidly became that of troubleshooter, advisor and unofficial promoter for western expansion. He was assigned the task of settling land claims, particularly those of the MeĢtis and squatters. B...
