Van Ness was born in 1920, earned a B.S. from New Jersey State Teachers College at Trenton (1943) and an M.A. from Columbia University (1946), and worked at Trenton State College from 1947 to 1987, serving as associate professor of physical education and athletic director until 1971 and then as Director of Athletics after 1971 as the Athletics Department separated from the Health and Physical Education Department in the early 1970s.
