Correspondence by and about Curtis, chiefly with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, concerns his education, theology, churchmanship, ordination, and career in the Episcopal Church. It records his work in St. John's Parish, Worcester County, 1856-1859; Catoctin Parish, Frederick County, and St. Luke's Church, Baltimore, 1860; Chester Parish, Kent County, 1861-1862; and Mount Calvary Church, Baltimore, 1862-1872. Some letters concern his refusal to give thanks for Union victories during the Civil War; his appointment as Whittingham's secretary; diocesan business he transacted in the Bishop's absence, 1866; his doctrinal views; conversion to the Roman Catholic Church, and deposition from the Episcopal ministry, 1872.

Whittingham, William Rollinson, 1805-1879

William Rollinson Whittingham was born in New York City, N.Y., and graduated from the General Theological Seminary in 1825. He was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1829 and became rector of Saint Mark's Church in Orange, N.J. Whittingham later served as rector of Saint Luke's Church in New York City, and in 1835 became a professor of ecclesiastical history at the General Theological Seminary.
