Invoice to the Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts requesting payment for hemp raised in 1789, May 4, 1791.

This manuscript invoice to the Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was created by two men, Ephraim Weston and Nathan Brown; it contains their request to be paid for their hemp they raised in 1789. The recto of the invoice was written in Lincoln, Massachusetts on May 4, 1791 and reads as follows: "To the Treas[ure]r of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Sir / Please to pay Mr. John Adams the bounty due to us the subscribers, for hemp rais'd by us in the year one thousand seven hundred & eighty-nine and his receipt shall be a discharge. [signed] Eph[rai]m Weston [and] Nathan Brown / Lincoln May 4th 1791." The verso contains a statement of receipt, in the same hand as the recto, and John Adams' signature. The statement reads: "May 7, 1791 Rec[eive]d sixteen shillings & one penny for the within order £0.16.1 [signed] John Adams."
