ArchivalResource

Papers of Levi Pitman, 1831-1892.

The papers contain 17 volumes of a diary, 1844-1882, documenting life in Shenandoah County, Va., and his various activities as clockmaker, carpenter, mechanic, inventer, doctor, dentist, and repairer of muscial instruments. The initial pages of the first volume were used as a commonplace book. Of interest are Pitman's mention of his many mechanical innovations and inventions, activities of the United Brethern Church and local news. Civil War entries note his union sympathies and troop movements in his neighborhood during the Valley Campaigns. A business ledger is also present and includes entries for many local families, including the Henkels, and businesses, as well as for Mt. Hebron Church. Miscellaneous loose papers contain cures; recipes; an 1852 indenture; list of subscribers to build a church, 1847; children's letters, 1835; essays; biographical sketch of James Morgan Fitzgerald; broadside, 1879, for a boy's school; "Over there" movie poster; "Yearning (just for you)" sheet music; and an 1876 pamphlet by L. Pitman "Signs of the times ..."
