Iris Elizabeth Macumber was born on May 1, 1908, in Madison County, Iowa. She received her B. S. (1930) from Iowa State College (University) in home economics. She taught at Macksburg Schools for two years and worked for the Iowa Extension Service as a home demonstration agent for a number of years. She later moved to Dayton, Ohio, where she worked for the Ohio Extension Service. She retired from the Ohio Extension Service in 1976.
