Thomas John Claggett papers, 1767-1816.

Bishop Claggett's papers cover all aspects of his ecclesiastical career, from 1767 to 1816, together with subsequent references and biographical information. This episcopate spanned a crucial and formative period in the history of the Episcopal Church, which was struggling to reorganize and overcome the disabling effects of the American Revolution. Political, ecclesiastical, clerical, legal, and organizational matters are fully dealt with in these papers, along with many events, such as the War of 1812 and the dispute over the election of James Kemp as Suffragan Bishop, 1814, which occasioned the schism of the Rev. George Dashiell and led to establishment of the Evangelical Episcopal Church. Many manuscripts concern local and parish history, as well as affairs in other dioceses and organization of the Episcopal Church in the rest of the country. Holdings include Claggett's certificates of ordination as deacon and priest, by the Bishop of London, 1767; his certificate of consecration as bishop, 1792; twenty-nine books from his library; an engraved portrait; and other memorabilia.
