John T. and Erminie M. Nave papers, 1916-1996.

Papers, chiefly 1964-1973 and 1980-1993, re Republican Party activities in Greenwood County, S.C., political activities in city of Greenwood, S.C., the Third Congressional District of South Carolina, and the state of S.C., and John Nave's mayoral campaigns. The Naves became politically active in the early 1960s, when Republican Party membership was increasing across South Carolina among those dissatisfied with the Democratic Party. Their efforts focused on grass-roots activities aimed at building the Greenwood County Republican Party. Few items in this collection relate to statewide Republican candidacies, national politics, or the Naves' personal lives. Collection is arranged in six series: General Papers (1916-c.1993); Elections (1964-1992); Republican Party (S.C.); Mailing Lists; Photographs; Newspaper Clippings (1958-1996); plus one Oversize Bound Scrapbook (1964). Republican Party series (1958-1993) is broken down into sub-series for the Party in the town of Greenwood, in Greenwood County, in the Third Congressional District, and throughout South Carolina. This series includes a copy of Mrs. Nave's book, History of the Republican Party in Greenwood County, published in 1996, which discusses the Party's rise and success ca. 1958-1993. Much of the material related to the Republican Party in this series is derived from the Naves' committee service. Of particular interest is a brochure from the early 1960s attacking the "loyalty oath" that bound all those who voted in the S.C. Democratic primaries to vote for the Democratic nominees in the general elections. A 1916 document lists the South Carolina Republican Party's Electoral College slate.
