Alsop family correspondence and shipping papers, 1800-1946.

The collection seems to revolve around Charles R. Alsop of Middletown, Connecticut. He was prominent in the shipping business and manufacturing, and held a number of patents for work on electric railway signs and whistles. The bulk of the letters written to Charles R. were from his sister Lucy while Charles was at Yale. There are several business-related letters to Charles as well. Also included are subscription records for the Kelsey Steamboat, a proposed improvement in steamboats. Also includes Leffingwell family papers, including a sermon by William Leffingwell following the assassination of President Lincoln. Significant, but of unknown relationship to either family are shipping records, including provisions, customs records, and bills of lading for more than 30 vessels. The main cargo on board these ships was rum.
