Born in Norwalk, California, Asawa is known for her wire sculpture, public commissions, and activism in education and the arts. In 1945, she attended Black Mountain College, where she was taught by Josef Albers, Buckminster Fuller, and Merce Cunningham, through whom she met David Tudor.
