Ernest Gillette photographs, 1910-1933 and undated, bulk 1920-1924.

Collection comprises three photograph albums (about 100 pgs.), loose photographic prints, and a few other personal papers. The 5"x12" albums contain approximately 600 mostly 3.25"x 4.5" black-and-white photographs taken by Gillette (1920-1924), with captions, primarily depicting Stone & Webster projects in the Dominican Republic, especially canal building. There are also photographs of the engineering crew and their recreational activities, and images of the U.S. Marine presence, building of the sugar cane industry, markets, railroads, factories, coffee production, and scenes of Dominican and Haitian towns and villages. Includes fifteen 9"x7" black-and-white undated photographs of Santo Domingo City, several with captions; and four pages of published photographs on the development of the Denver, Colorado, Civic Center site. Also includes a 1910 Rand McNally map of the Dominican Republic; a third-grade report card (1933) for Gillette's daughter, Dorothy; as well as four badly deteriorated 4"x6" silver gelatin photographs (undated) with faint images of unidentified subjects, probably Gillette family members. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.
